Starr’s Shop was diagonally opposite the Star pub in Whaplode, and as a result Jean Craig says the area became known as Star’s Corner.
When Lila died suddenly in 1954 the shop was shut as Ernie was unable to run that as well as his haulage business.
Jean thought readers might like to see these images, probably taken by Ernie in the late ’40s in Spalding when Tuliptime was in its heyday.

These photographs bring back memories of winding up the petrol pumps at Starr’s shop and garage at Whaplode for Jean Craig (Starr).
Her parents Ernie and Lila Starr kept the shop, Ernie advising Tuliptime visitors who stopped to fill up with petrol on the best tulip fields to visit. Jean was allowed to help as a teenager and says petrol then was 2s 3d.
