Sessions House and Spalding Prison

This photo, taken from the edge of the Sheep Market, Spalding is looking towards the old Session House seen here on the left. To the right of that is what was the old Prison.

The Sessions House, built in 1842 is still there today although has recently closed.The Prison was built in 1826 and was known as “Her Majesty’s Prison for the parts of Holland and Kesteven”.  It was improved in 1848-52 and enlarged to have 95 separate cells, airing yards and workshops.It finally closed in 1884.
