Richard King – Long Sutton Firebrigade

Dear All
I, as a serving member of Long Sutton Fire Station would just like to take a few moments to reflect on the photo’s I have gathered of a retired fire fighter from our station.
Roy Shipley who has very recently sadly passed away joined the NFS in Long Sutton during the war years as a runner and followed to become a retained fire fighter when it disbanded in 1948. Roy served the people of Long Sutton and surrounding areas for over 40 years and offered great service to the community until his retirement in 1988.
I for one have very fond memories of Roy who just for the record retired before I became a fire fighter. Roy would often attend our station on a Thursday night and reminisce about the incidents he and his crew attended during his lengthy career. He would also look to aquire any bits and bob’s to keep his beloved trailor pump (pictured) in good working order.
He along with his friends and colleagues even attended an open day we organised just to show ”us young uns” as he called us how it was done.
Roy will be very sadly missed by all at the fire station both past and present and it will be a great honour for our crew to escort Roy to the crematorium to say our final goodbyes.
I have posted a picture of the old fire station on West Street which is now known as the COOP Funeral Home it is comforting to know that Roy is currently resting peacefully in his old station that provided him with so many happy memories.
We will be saying our final goodbyes and giving Roy our last salute on Friday 21st October at 12am at Surfleet crematorium. Thank you for reading Richard King Watch Manager Long Sutton Fire Station
