A real photo postcard showing a view looking towards the Johnson Hospital and St Peters Church in Priory Road, Spalding. Undated.
Extract taken from Lincs to the Past – The Johnson Hospital was founded under the provision of the will of Miss Elizabeth Ann Johnson, which stipulated that her estates were to be used, after the death of her sister Mary Ann Johnson, to build a hospital in Spalding. The Trustees of Johnson Hospital, comprising local vicars and prominent inhabitants of Spalding, were appointed under the terms of Elizabeth Johnson’s will to oversee the building and administration of the hospital.
In 1879 a competition was held to find an architect and design for the building. Once a successful architect was chosen Mr James Bulling was employed to undertake building work in accordance with the architect’s plans. The hospital was built and equipped between 1879 and October 1881 at a cost of around £9000. Officially the hospital opened its doors on 12 October 1881.
The Church of St. Peter, on the site of the old Abbey, was a red brick building, erected in 1875-6.
