Lincolnshire Bonnets were a very common feature in 1890’s. Ladies wore these bonnets in the fields, They were hand made using white material, heavily starched “poke” to stiffen. The bonnets had a very practical purpose firstly to shade the face in sunshine and secondly to protect the wearer from the wind.
The picture shows two ladies gleaning. The term gleaning means gathering together useful remnants of a crop after it had been harvested. This picture was taken near Pinchbeck and the village church is in the background.
