Update from Monica llet daughter of Private Neal

Hi, I only know vague details about the Secret Army stuff. Before Mum was pregnant with me they stored some of their explosives under Mum and Dads bed in their house in Clay Lake. Dad said when he found out Mum was expecting he insisted they were stored else were. He talked about the underground bunkers in the Marshes and insisted the explosives were never removed. There’s not much else I can tell you. Unfortunately Mum died last month aged 96 but I don’t think she knew much more. He talked more about being in Egypt as all the Secret Army stuff was subject to the official secrets act.

  1. My Dad was George Neal. He joined the LDV at the beginning of the war as he was in his 30’s and in a reserved occupation and was recruited into the ‘ Secret Army’ when it was formed along with Cis Baker. He would often spend whole weekends training in the fens and marshes around the Lincolnshire Wash. Mum believes he was sent to France one weekend. He spoke of underground bunkers in the marshe where they kept amno and explosives. He was a demand that they were still there. In 1944 he was eventually called up and served in Egypt and the Middle East until Spring 1947.

    1. Monica a big thank you. Do you have anymore info? Do you know the other members listed?
      Regards

  2. I knew Cis Baker. Strangely his occupation was a Baker. His daughter Susan, is my age and the last time I heard of her she lived in Whittlesey Her married name is Shaw. I think! I’m pretty sure E Baxter was Ernie Baxter. My hubby thinks thinks Ernie was something to do with agriculture and was a Councillors in Spalding the same time as Tussie Ford and Alice Munson in the 1950’s
I don’t know much more about their activities except for if Hitler had invaded the would have gone ‘ to ground and become the resistance. Oh and their names would have been on the Gestarpo’s execution list!. Unfortunately most people who knew what really happened have died now.

  3. My Grandad Jim (James) Davis – we have a photo of him wearing a uniform like this. Does anyone know anything about his involvement (or not0 ?
