With people moaning about the heat in July 2026, I decided it was time for a post about SNOW! Just so everyone knows there is always another problem.
Early in January 1956 the big complaint was fog but Lincolnshire, with visibility of 10-15 yards, was better off than most. Then came the snow! Around 8th January an epic blizzard had a major impact.
Passengers who left Grimsby on the 5.50pm to London, which should have been a four hour journey, arrived the next morning. Five people were stuck in a bus near RAF Stenigot but the RAF had to get out a helicopter to deliver emergency food supplies to Donington on Bain. Alford and Binbrook were also cut off. A party of anglers spent a cold night in a bus near Ulceby Cross. A snow plough became trapped between Lincoln and Wragby!
Life in Spalding was said to be ‘at a standstill’. Roads from there to all the main towns were blocked with a 75mph wind whipping up drifts. There was a seven vehicle pile up at Gosberton and Holland council had to cancel their meeting!
The attached pictures are clearly from a promotional effort for the AA, who in those days did have the demeanour of a public service.
