This photo is of Stephensons Bridge, Sutton Bridge.
Stephensons Bridge was the second Bridge to cross the river, after the first one was found to be awkwardly sited. Designed by Robert Stephenson, it was opened in 1850, its position being approximately halfway between the original one and the present one. It was a Swing Bridge, used only for road traffic until 1864 when the Midland Railway acquired powers to use it for rail traffic too. It was demolished once the current Bridge was built in 1897.
