Andrew Bowell photos of St Polycarps Church, Holbeach Drove
Built in 1870, next to Lambert Bridge, this tiny Church was used daily as a place of worship and a school. Indeed the old school desks are still used as pews, and the old outside toilet building is still there.
St. Polycarp was a 2nd Century Christian Bishop of Smyrna, a town now in modern day Turkey. He was a disciple of John the Apostle, and it was John who ordained him Bishop of Smyrna.
He died a martyr, for failing to burn incense to the romantic empower. He was bound & burned at the stake, then stabbed when the fire failed to touch him. His final words were; “I bless you Father for judging me worthy of this hour, so that in the company of the martyrs I may share the cup of Christ.”
