Spotlight on North St Crowland

Can you help with more information about North St and the families that lived there.

Janet Iszatt is researching the Coley side of her family and in discussion with an elderly aunt they have the following questions and comments. Can you help or do you have memories of North St. and the people that lived there.

  1. Can anybody help with the celebration in photo No1 below
  2. Photo No 3 The picture was taken outside 82, North St. Was the picture taken in the 1930’s Do we know why the Rolls Royce was there? Did the chauffeur live there?
  3. The Lincolnshire Free Press published an archive article (with photo’s) on 27th Nov 2014 about Wiliam Burton snr and his wife who celebrated their Diamond wedding anniversary in 1914. They had 4 sons and 4 daughters apparently they had kept Kings Head for 28 years. The pub at the end of the street ( on the right of the photo) was the Kings Head Inn.
William Burton was Innkeeper on the 1911 census. William Burton jnr is landlord in the Kellys Directory in 1926 and 1930. It burnt down but I don’t know when?

My great grandparents William and Martha (nee Brand) Coley lived at number 82 until their deaths in 1941. William died on 25th June, Martha on 11th Sept. Not sure when they moved there. On the1901 census they are living down Gas Terrace Crowland. On 1911 census they are living at 82 with 7 of their 11 children. So they lived there for at least 30 years. My aunt was born in 1926 and has many fond memories of visiting her grandparents house.

My aunt remembers a Mrs Warren living next door to them at number 80. To get to the outside toilet at the back of the house she had to go out of her front door, walk past my great grandparents house and turn left down a narrow passage way to get to the back yard. My aunt thinks she had a daughter who joined the Salvation Army and possibly went abroad.
