This picture shows a brief outlay of the Turnpike Roads dated around 1840. Turnpikes were toll roads, with a gate over the road so that travelers along that road could pass through the gate only upon payment of a toll. These raised funds to build and maintain roads.

Can we be sure about the date of this map? It shows Deeping St Nicholas, which did not come into existence until 1856. Or is it a twentieth century sketch of an earlier time?
