I have discovered a great-grandaunt and uncle who according to the 1901 and 1911 census listed their occupations as Assisting In Public House and Inn Keeper. The Postal Address was Crown Inn, Moulton Sea’s End, Spalding.
Thanks let’s hope someone can help. Regards Geoff
The landlord in this picture was Alfred Smith, my great-grandfather.
We have a similar photo but the clarity is not that great, would love to see the original photo in original resolution if its available
Thanks please tell us more regards Geoff
is there a way to upload photo’s?
My grandmother was born 1913 and was born into the pub. Alfred is landlord on the 1911 census and also the 1939 psudo-census.
I’m trying to draw links to the Smith family that were brewers in Surfleet (on site of the mermaid pub) but cannot be sure the two familys are related, mainly due to Smith being a very common surname.
One thing I do know is that the Surfleet Smith’s were related to the John Smith brewers in Tamworth.
Also the Crown seems to have closed somewhere around 1958, and by 1965 was re-opened as “the New Crown Inn” – I’m assuming on the same building, rather than an alternate address on Westlode street
Can you email the photos and I will add them to the page? Regards Geoff Chainbridgeforge@gmail.com
