Cross & Lock Up, Deeping St James

A photo of the Cross & lock up at Deeping St James.  This was originally the market cross, but in 1819 the market cross was converted for use as the village round house or lock up because there was sufficient space within the base for its new use.  Village lock ups are historic buildings that were used for the temporary detention of people in rural parts of England. They were often used for the confinement of drunks who were usually released the next day or to hold people being brought before the local magistrate.
