Can You Help the Ancliffe Family?

Can you help David Ancliffe and his wife who are researching their family history. Whaplode Drove is where my Great Grandad George Ancliffe is shown on the 1881 census at Whaplode Bank with his wife Mary and 5 children. He is described as a Railway Labourer & free Methodist Preacher.

In the 1891 census he is living at Dockings Holt Little Sutton and has 4 further children including my Grandfather Joseph Ellis Ancliffe born 1884 Sutton St Nicholas.   George is then shown in the 1901 and 1911 censuses at Gatehouse Long Sutton. He died in 1924 and is buried in Long Sutton with Mary

Joseph became an Apprentice Carpenter on the M & G Railway before joining the Lincs Police in 1905 and subsequently being stationed in Stamford, Caythorpe, Barrowby, Market Deeping, Deeping St James, Gedney Drove End and finally Ruskington.

Anecdotally I believe Joseph was expelled from school for hitting a Master when he was doling out corporal punishment to Joseph’s best friend!!!

  1. Hi, Victor Ancliffe was my uncle too. We stayed at the house on Rectory Road Ruskington most summers. My father was Cecil Muxlow and my mother Maisie Goodwin. Violet Ancliffe was my mothers sister.

      1. I don’t remember a lot about his side of the family and unfortunately my mother and aunty Violet have passed away . They had a son called Christopher who emigrated to Albuquerque in America in the seventys and he married and had two daughters one was called Abrah .

    1. Hello June, I just found this site and it happens that Violet Ancliffe is my grandmother. She was an only child. Maisie was her Aunt, but a year younger than Violet (I think). Maisie’s oldest sister was Violet’s mom.

  2. Hello, I am an Ancliffe in America. One mentioned above and I believe, David, we have met many times. I might be happy to help with this inquiry above, but would prefer not to have comments just go directly to post for all to view. There are some incorrect comments above. Violet is my grandmother, Chris is my dad. If you want to get in touch and correspond, you have my email from below. Best, Rachel Ancliffe
