I was a little boy at the time, we lived in the Bank House opposite the Sutton Bridge golf course and had it not been for the old dry dock where the flood water reached the lip, our house would have been flooded as well as the surrounding land. To trying to remember some of what happened, my mother helped in getting flood relief etc. for the people who were directly affected by the flooding of their homes. Her efforts along with others were recognised by the Salvation Army and others.
I remember she was presented with a hand embroidered clock which we had for many years in pride of place on the bureau.
We must remember that things were very different back then, we were still getting over World War 2, and there was a lot of poverty. Had the River Nene flooded down the road up to the Golf Course, the Huts which housed the very poor just up the road from our house would have been under water too, what would have happened I do know.
I was just a little boy at the time aged 5 years old. However I still remember the Big Flood.
Thanks for memories tell us more. Geoff
