NOT FOR THE SQUEAMISH!
Hutchessons were well known saddlers in the Gosberton area, right from Victorian times until the middle of the 20th century. They plied their trade in both Gosberton village (opposite what was the Five Bells) and, as in this photograph, Risegate. The photo shows Henry Hutchesson and his son Edmund, taken around the turn of the 20th century. As well as saddlers they were horse slaughterers – not an easy, pleasant or clean job, but someone gad to do it.
Does anyone know where the Hutchessons lived and worked in Risegate? One theory is that it was on Siltside, near Carters Bridge.
