The SS Mistley came up the river with a cargo of 120 tons of manure in January 1908 and went aground just downstream of Pannell’s boatyard slipway. Much of the cargo of manure had to be unloaded before it could be refloated and moved up to finish unloading at Chamberlain’s Mill in the High Street, opposite Herring Lane ( later sold to G.W Plowman & Sons ). This vessel remained at Spalding for a month before there was sufficient water in the river to float to the sea.
