Hi I have found a book which references your great uncle. Look in section called birth of an industry. https://www.heritagesouthholland.co.uk/2020/02/bulbs-in-britain/
I will add all other sections of the book over the next week. Please share more of Richard Wellband if you have it. Maybe photo?
He was an interesting man.
Regards
Geoff
Ps:
a couple of other comments from Facebook
The Richard(Dick) Wellband I knew ran a garage in Swan St. and lived in Halmergate with his wife Ivy.
John Wellband (relative) ran Welecs camera shop in New Rd
The Dick Wellband daffodil was bred by Sarah Elizabeth Backhouse in 1921 it was first introduced in New York where it caused a sensation. It was named after Richard Dawson Wellband a bulb grower of Spalding. In 1931 it was given an awarded of merit from the Bulb GrowersAssociation. It can still be found in a few Spalding gardens. Dick Wellband was my husband step Grandfather.

My great great uncle Richard Dawson Wellband developed the Dick Wellband daffodil and was a very well known horticulturist in Spalding.
I will do my best to find out more. Regards Geoff

Thanks for this interesting piece of information, Monica. A daffodil named after a Spaldonian!
