  1. Hello, what a lovely picture of Monks House. My family used to farm it prior to the Smiths buying it. I know that Benjamin Neal (1801-l868) ( (my gt gt gt grandfather) farmed it and then his daughter Sarah Neal. I am trying to trace Benjamin’s parents and wives and wonder if anyone knows where there might be records of this. Maybe records for Monks House? Any help would be much appreciated.
    Many thanks.

    2. Hello, Patricia….
My name is John Jay Neal, sister Linda and brother Fred are 3 siblings of a Neal family linage. The thread of this posting has led me to contact you because of the name Benjamin Neal who was your gt gt gt grandfather and also the relationship to the “Monk” house. The photos I’ve found are almost exact duplicates of a painting I have painted by a man name Garcia. I have ran down that painter to a photograph of the house in Spalding England. Could we be related? I’m also planning a visit to England hoping to find the house still standing. Can you add any more info? Also, if you’ve a direct email address I’d love to share info directly with you.

  4. I am interested in Monk’s House in the mid eighteenth century when it was owned by Abel Smith of the Nottingham banking family. I am particularly interested in knowing if there are cellars. In 1745 Bonnie Prince Charlie marched with his army to Derby. a mere twelve miles from Nottingham. His soldiers sang a song which ended with the threat of them coming to Nottingham and taking the contents of Smith’s Bank. I know Abel Smith Snr. and his sons took the contents of the bank to the marshes of Lincolnshire, but wonder if they were taken here, the house owned by Abel Smith Jr., who became a member of the Spalding Gentlemen’s Society.

    1. Hi thanks for your comment. Locally there is a legend that there was a tunnel which went from the Priors Oven which is the the town and again is believed to be the Priory jail to Monks House. Legend again says the monks could use the tunnel to leave the Priory undetected. I think this is unlikely as the tunnels would of flooded as the land is something like 4m above sea level.
However, I have found nicely brick constructed storage cellars. This was an article in local paper.

I will try and find out more information

  5. Hello Everyone….my name is John Jay Neal, son of John Joseph Neal, grandson of John Adam Neal, great grandson of Joseph Neal. I am of the Neal family in Smith Creek, MI and now 74 years old, retired in Windsor, CO. I have a painting of the Monks house on the wall of my home which has been handed down since grt grt Grandpa Neal commissioned it be painted by a painter named Garcia. I’m researching the house because I’m planning to visit England in 2023 and hope I can find it still standing. The only reference to date I’ve found is this email stream and an news article by the Lincolnshire Free Press reporting the damage sustained in the home. That article was printed in April, 4, 1974 which was found by my father in September 1999. Can anyone report the existence of this property and it’s owner of today. Last reports, as mentioned in the article, the house was owned and lived in by Mr. John Smith. Please circle back to me with any more information that can help me make plans for 2023. Thank you.
