Gedney Dyke Mill 1932

Gedney Dyke Mill.  Photo dated as 1932.

In its prime, the mill at Gedney Dyke was one of the most elegant in Lincolnshire. Built in 1836 for a Mr Rubbins , the 68 feet mill was working until 1942. The mill lost its sails in 1947 followed by the cap soon after. It originally had eight floors.

  1. Many years ago ,i did some business with Buster Barnes .A great guy who had all the time in the world for everybody .I bought two tractors from him. He took me into his office which was located in the bottom of the mill and while he was counting the cash id given him ,i glanced at the wall opposite .Nailed to it , were several cheques that had bounced from rogue dealers .One of them was for 750,000 pounds from an Irish dealer. How many businesses can sustain a loss like that without even batting an eyelid ……..

    1. Barnes Brothers were my grandmothers brothers. I remember visiting this place as a child when Charlie and Lizzie were living there. Lizzie was hunched little old lady. It was a treasure trove of old tractors, fire engine etc. I am the granddaughter of the only girl in the family. Lilian Mabel Barnes then Turner.

  2. Came across this sadly dilapidated mill whilst camping nearby Such a shame to let it get to this condition The residents of Gedney Dyke should get together and restore this building to its full glory

  3. Buster and his brother, whose name escapes me at the moment, would venture over to Thurlow Nunns at Downham to do a bit of business with Fred Bumstead the sales manager.
Afterwards they’d amble down the yard to the scrap heap and pick out all the old worn out Massey clutch plates to take back.
I asked Buster what could he possibly want with them, and he said ‘just to get em on the boat mate, just to get em on the boat’
