The Bridge was outside Chain Bridge Forge. In the 1920s Mr George Dodd the blacksmith became the harbourmaster and he had the cranking handle in the Forge which fitted into a mechanism on the bridge and on rotating it open and closed bridge. The bridge swung open to allow barges access to the port of Spalding. It was believed he was paid £5/year and 1 shilling for each time the bridge was open.
