Look upwards above the tower to see and marvel of the recessed broached octagonal spire rising to 181 feet with three tiers of ornate lucarenes (openings on the flat surface) on alternating sides. Such craftsmanship and dedication were surely a leap of faith. It is believed to have been constructed in time for the consecration of the church by Bishop Gynwell of Lincoln in May 1361. The spire is topped by a golden weather-cock taken down and regilded in the late 1990’s. Once restored it was returned to its lofty place by the Vicar, the Revd Canon Peter Hill. His climb of the 100 foot spire was seen and cheered by the pupils of William Stukeley Church of England School.
