My Great Great Grandparents were William Fisher and Mary Fisher (nee Harlow). I believe they were both born (1819) and later married (1843) in Godmanchester. William was an agricultural labourer who in his latter years became a shepherd. William and Mary had several children, (George was my Great Grandfather). By the 1861 census, the family had moved to Gosberton and lived in Wargate Way. By the time the 1871 Census was done, George Fisher had left home.
The rootspoint.com 1871 Census details show the Fishers living at Lake of Cambridge. This is wrong. It should be the Duke of Cambridge.
William Fisher was a man born in 1819 in Huntingdonshire. During the 1871 UK Census he was 52 years old and lived in Lincolnshire. He appears as the head of his house in the 1871 UK Census.

Fascinating, Nicola. There were later generations of Fisher living in Salem Street, Gosberton, who were butchers. Are they descendants of William and Mary, do you know?
Sorry I have not replied before but I have only just seen your message (5.7.25).

Hi, Nicola,
I’m Secreataey of the Gosberton & District Local History Society. I’ve undertaken extensive research into Gosberton families, and the Fisher family of Salem Street are known to me. The William and Mary Fisher you mention in the 1871 are not known to me – they are of an earlier generation. I will undertake some research to see if I can establish if there is any link between the two families, and let you know.

Thanks for this. I haven’t been able to establish a link between the ‘butchers’ Fishers of Salem Street and ‘your’ Fishers.
However, for your interest, I’ve checked the Census returns for your Fishers – they didn’t reside in the Duke of Cambridge, but were an adjacent entry, so most probably they lived next door.
Thank you for the update about the Fishers living next door to, and not actually in, the Duke of Cambridge pub.
I have seen a lovely old photo on the internet headed Bygone Gosberton, Salem Street Residents 1911 and the cottages shown in the photo are occupied by farm labourers which would tie in with the Fisher family albeit the Fishers were there in an earlier era.
Since your latest message, I have been going through some of my old family tree notes and have come across the names of Booth and Jessop. I do not know how far back you are going in your research but as you said you were looking into Gosberton families, I wondered if any of the details I have might be of interest – eg –
Below relates to three of William and Mary Fishers children:-
Ellen Jessop b. 1859, Gosberton, married Tom Fisher 1879 in Gosberton.
John Booth married Mary Fisher 1878 in Gosberton.
Walter Robinson married Jane Fisher 1882 in Gosberton.
