GOSBERTON FEN BRIDGE – A COSTLY REPAIR

I’ve posted this photo before, but I just wanted to share some little snippet of its history that I’ve just discovered.

Back in the very early 1900s, the bridge you see in the photo – which was already around 100 years old by then – was in need of repair. The trouble was that there was a dispute as to who was responsible for its repair – either Holland County Council or Spalding Rural District Council. The matter ended up in a lengthy and costly legal action. Spalding RDC took Holland CC to court on the matter – but the judgement went against Spalding RDC, who were stuck with legal costs of £500, on top of having to repair the bridge. The repair itself cost only £34! I wonder if any resignations or dismissals ensued!
