THE POPULATION OF SOUTH HOLLAND IN 1931

For anyone interested in population changes over history, here are the high-level figures from the 1931 Census, with a comparison to the previous census in 1921.

Overall, the population of the ‘Holland’ area increased by 7.5% between the two Censuses.

The administrative boundaries of the councils have changed over the years, so it’s difficult to compare these figures with the latest (2021) Census. However, the population in ‘Spalding Urban District’ in 1931 was 12,592. In 2021, the population of Spalding was 30,556, an increase of 143%.(so, nearly 2.5 times larger).

  1. Interesting. I was under the impression that the 1931 records were lost in the second world war. (and because there was no census in 1941, we now have to wait for the 1951 census – not including me I think. I was born in ’51!).

    1. The 1931 Census records may well have been lost during the war, but this article is from a book published in 1940.
