BROOKS BAKERS CLOSES 1991

Derrick Brooks, whose family had run a bakery in Gosberton for more than 150 years, retired in 1991. As he had no-one to hand the business over to, the bakery, on Salem Street, closed its doors for good. Derrick explained to a reporter, who ran a story about his retirement, that he has had to rise at four or five o’clock each morning, and that although he was looking forward to a rest, it was a sad parting. His retirement present from staff and people of the village was a glasshouse, seeds, a seed tray and a bag of compost, as he enjoyed gardening. He told the reporter, “ The bakehouse here will close down. I feel sad about this but it’s very old property, this is the problem.”

His bakery was renowned for its dough cakes.
