Flashback Friday: A Celebration at Whaplode Drove Church Rooms
This wonderful group photograph was taken outside the Church Rooms in Whaplode Drove, showing a community celebration likely connected to a royal coronation event, judging by the Union flags and the ceremonial outfits. Although the exact date is unknown, the clothing and staging suggest a mid twentieth century gathering, possibly a village pageant or crowning ceremony.
Pictured are adults and children arranged on a decorated platform in front of the Church Rooms, which served for many decades as a central meeting place for village activities, concerts, youth events, and fundraising socials. It is a lovely reminder of how the community has always come together for special occasions.
FACTS ABOUT THE CHURCH ROOMS
• The Church Rooms were built in 1909, funded through local donations and church led fundraising.
• They originally served as a multipurpose space for parish meetings, Sunday School, concerts, and community gatherings.
• During the mid twentieth century, the building was used for Women’s Institute events, youth clubs, harvest suppers, and church socials.
• The structure was well known for its distinctive corrugated metal exterior, a cost effective construction style popular for village halls at that time.
• Even after later refurbishments and repurposing, the Church Rooms remain an important part of Whaplode Drove’s heritage, remembered fondly by many residents.
