  1. In the 1891 census, the Royal Oak was number 25 Cowbit Road, and the occupier/landlord was Frederick Culpin, with wife Eliza and son Fred junior. Having researched house numbers lower down, I am fairly certain Cowbit Road has been re-numbered at some point post-1891. I’ve concentrated my research on nos. 1-20 in connection with Soames brewery which supplied the Royal Oak. The owner, Francis Soames lived at no 7. One surprise: In 1891 Westbourne House (No. 6) and Westbourne Lodge (No. 16) were distinct houses. ( I for one have confused them previously!!) Don’t know the no. of the brewery – 6A possibly??
