The Ship Surfleet- possibly 1910 – Plus Save our Pub

Following the post by Jane Harris about the village plans to hopefully retain their pub for the community here is a picture of The Ship (at Surfleet Reservoir) in the early 1900s, probably about 1910.

The name above the pub door is Mary Ann Wingad who spent at least 40 years in the pub between 1881 and 1921. She was born in Gosberton in 1842. Annoyingly I can’t find her maiden name, not sure if anyone else can?

She lived at the Ship at first with her husband William WIngad (sometimes spelled Wingard) and after his death pre-1901 as sole landlady of the pub.

By 1921 she was still living at the pub but her son-in-law William Buck was the proprietor.

William and Mary Ann were living at Bermondsey, in 1871 before returning to their home county in the late 1870s. They had 5 children Sarah, William, Ellen, Susan and Annie.

I am not sure who the people in the photograph are, it could be family or the owners or perhaps just guests on a fishing trip (we have pictures of the same people fishing in the reservoir)

Good luck with the campaign to save the pub.
