The Dutch have long been part of the Spalding bulb industry and the firm Geomans put a float in the very first parade. ”
l remember It well. The butterfly was really beautiful said Bob Goemans, son of the firm’s founder. He recalled that the framework was made by an employee Charlie Collins from drawing sent over from Holland by Adrianus van Driel, the celebrated Dutch designer, who was succeeded by his equally talented son, today’s designer Kees van Driel.

Couple of photos of crowds in the stands at the Black Swan Field, home of Spalding United F.C. Quite probably not crowds at a football match given the attire but interesting images in my opinion none the less. Not dated unfortunately but 1900-1930.

In the 1905-06 season Spalding had two major football teams it seems (both these were taken by Beales)

Gosberton Risegate resident Mark Joy has sent us this picture of wheat being combined in 1959.
1959.
Mark says: “My Dad, Gus Joy, is driving the lorry and Fred Wilson is operating the combine. “They were working (and did for many years) for Proctor Bros Ltd,of Gosberton.
“The combine is a Claas vehicle and the lorry a J5 Bedford reg OJL 521.
The photograph was taken on a remote field called Pump Field, close to the South Forty Foot Drain, at the bottom of Broad Drove (almost three miles from Gosberton Clough, on Surfleet Fen Farm.
Mark Joy, from Gosberton Risegate, sent us this fantastic photo of his dad, Gus (Augustus), on a John Deere tractor in 1950, pea cutting down Broad Drove, Surfleet Fen Farm, near Gosberton Clough, with Les Jackson and Fred Wilson.
‘My Dad was born on December 28, 1929. He left school when he turned 14 years old in 1943.
The following month, he started work for Proctor Bros. (Gosberton) Ltd, Gosberton, near Spalding. He began by working horses in the fields for three years and then progressed to driving a John Deere tractor in approx 1947 and using it in the fields until approx 1953 when he began driving a Bedford lorry for Proctor Brothers (Gosberton) Ltd.
He remained with them for 65 years and was still driving their lorries (approximately 12 different lorries in the years he worked for them) until he was 79 years old in 2008, when my Mum, Rita, was taken very ill and he had to finish work to care for her.
He is now almost 88 years old and I’m sure that due to his high level of fitness, he would have been driving Proctor’s lorries well into his 80s had this not happened.’
Private George Dobney, the fourth son of Mr and Mrs Dobney of Risegate House, Gosberton, killed by a shell. He was 20 years old.
