The South Holland Life Trustees are in possession of nine volumes from the ‘Lincolnshire Notes and Queries’ series of quarterly journals that were published from the late 1880s and into the 1930s (at least).  The journal described itself as “devoted to the antiquities, parochial records, family history, traditions, folklore, quaint customs, &&c, of the county.”

The nine volumes we hold cover the period 1888 to 1909 (Volumes 1 to 10, though Volume 3 is missing). They cover the whole county of Lincolnshire.

I thought it would be of value to trawl through these to identify any articles which contain references to places specifically in the South Holland District of Lincolnshire – but also some pertaining to wider parts of Lincolnshire that may be of general interest to South Holland history researchers. I hope these articles contain some hidden gems – and maybe even brick-wall breakers for researchers!  We can live in hope.

These publications extracts are presented here in the chronological order they appeared in the Volumes – so apologies for their random order.

These publications – especially the earlier volumes – contain a wealth of information about Lincolnshire words and dialect, as well as Lincolnshire folklore. Sadly, time constraints have meant that those treasure troves of information are not included in these extracts – though I have found space and time to include Lincolnshire Place names (Part 5)

Old books such as these will become increasingly rare and we need to extract and preserve what relevant information we can.

If readers possess other volumes in this series, then I shall be glad to hear from you, with a view to borrowing them and updating this book of extracts.
