How 3D printers Work

3d printing3D printers utilize what’s known as additive manufacturing, which means that they create objects by starting with nothing and then add material.
The printer takes a strand of plastic (filament), melts it, and then lays it down on the print bed in a series of layers (slices) that stick together and form the object.

3d printingThe extruder needs to be able to move in 3 dimensions relative to the bed, in order to print the cross section of each layer (X and Y axes) and to move up to the next layer (Z axis).
